The Build-Versus-Buy Decision Has Changed For Software In Healthcare

Recently, I was in a room with the technology leadership of a large health system when the conversation turned to a software problem they’d been wrestling with. Their team had scoped it out, estimated the timeline and come back with a plan. The CIO leaned back and said what I’ve heard many times since: “We have the engineers. We understand the problem better than any vendor will. Why wouldn’t we just build this ourselves?” ​

It’s a reasonable question. And the answer is not as simple as it seems.​
