We’re Bringing Our Prior Authorization Tech to the Independent Practices That Need It

Dive deeper into this article with AI

I spent years as an radiologist watching prior authorization slow down care that patients needed immediately. The paperwork didn't stop the procedure from being necessary, but it certainly delayed it — sometimes by days or even weeks.

My staff and I spent hours gathering clinical documentation and submitting it blind, with no way to know whether the payer would approve it until after all that work was done. It was exhausting for my team and unfair to the patients we treated.

That experience led me to launch Humata Health. And it's what drove the announcement we're making today.

Introducing Humata Health, Built For Every Provider.

Today we're announcing a standalone prior authorization tool made specifically for independent practices, specialty clinics, and smaller health systems that requires zero EHR integration.

Providers upload their clinical documentation through a simple drag-and-drop interface. Humata Health scores it in real time against applicable Medicare coverage determinations and commercial payer policies, returns an instant completeness grade, and flags exactly which records, labs or step-therapy notes are missing before anything reaches the payer.

Additionally, Humata reads the uploaded clinical bundle and automatically generates responses to payer attestation and clinical survey questions, eliminating one of the most tedious and error-prone steps in the submission process. Staff get time back. Submissions go out cleaner. Approvals come faster.

The Gap Nobody’s Addressed

Until now, most of our clients were large hospitals and health systems. We built deep integrations directly into their electronic health records (EHRs), and we helped those organizations win more prior auth approvals faster. By getting prior auth right the first time, we streamlined the whole process for patients, providers and payers. But the large health system market addresses only part of the industry-wide problem.

Nearly half of all prior authorization requests in this country still travel by phone, fax, or mail. The clinicians doing that work burn roughly two full business days every week on it. They assemble their documentation, submit it and wait with zero visibility into whether the payer will approve or deny the request. It’s like fumbling for a light switch in the dark.

A technology gap compounds the problem. At conferences and in conversations with clinicians across the country, I keep hearing the same thing from smaller practices: they know AI is transforming prior auth at large health systems, but they have no way in. Available tools require enterprise IT infrastructure, complex EHR integrations and implementation timelines that stretch for months. Many practices haven’t deployed AI in their administrative workflows because of how the market developed. Technology vendors followed the money, which was in large health systems.

But that's the reality at independent practices, specialty clinics and regional health centers across America. Tens of thousands of them handle prior auth the same way they did 20 years ago because every tool that exists was expensive and built by payers, for payers. The provider's workflow was an afterthought, and patients waited longer because of it.

Why This Matters

Humata's mission has always been to make prior authorization work for providers, payers, and patients. All three carry the burden of a broken system.

Providers spend hours on administrative work that pulls them away from patient care. Payers receive incomplete submissions that slow their review process and drive up costs. Patients wait on approvals for treatments their physicians already determined they need.

Humata attacks that problem at the source. Cleaner documentation going in means faster decisions coming out, so patients get their treatments sooner. That's the thread running through everything Humata builds, and it's the reason this matters beyond market share.

The ultimate goal is to put prior authorization technology in the hands of every physician in this country. That’s why we’re creating a universal, AI-enabled portal where any provider submits any prior auth to any payer, regardless of specialty or EHR. That category of product does not exist today. [PRODUCT NAME] is how we build it, and today marks the first time anyone has.

Get Early Access

We've opened a limited early-access waitlist for independent practices, regional health centers and specialty clinics.

We built the enterprise version of this product over years of working directly alongside health systems. We’re building this version the same way. Beta participants work directly with the Humata team, and their feedback informs its development. The practices that join early will shape what prior auth technology looks like for the independent market for years to come.

If you run operations, billing or clinical oversight at your practice, this was built with you in mind. We’d love to hear from you.
